信息学院先进技术专题课程:
High Speed Networks and Mobile Computing

Course Aims & Objectives:
This course aims to provide an up-to-date knowledge of high-speed networks and mobile computing to students.
Part A covers basic concepts, architectures, protocols, advantages and limitations, and recent development of various high-speed networking technologies such as ATM; how the various networks cope with multimedia data transmission, multicast and anycast routing, and some multimedia applications. The current and future developments in high-speed networks are discussed.
Part B aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the many issues related to mobile computing. These issues are grouped under three areas: networks, and mobile routing protocol. Protocols such Mobile IP, as well as routing mechanisms and mobility management strategies that are needed to support mobile devices are discussed. Wireless Ad hoc networks are also studied extensively. Wireless LAN. Wireless channel characteristics. Multiple access schemes. Mobility management. Handoff issues. Delay guarantee for multimedia communication in mobile environment.

Syllabus:
Fundamentals of high speed network architectures and protocols. Inter-networking. Multimedia communications; Quality of Services; Integrated and differentiated services. Resource allocation and traffic control. Dynamic multicast and anycast routing protocols. Audio and video media transport in packet networks. Video on Demand. Multimedia applications.
Mobile computing. Mobile message routing. Mobile IP. Routing for mobile systems. Mobility management in high speed networks. Broadcast scheduling for real time information in mobile networks. Ad Hoc networks Cache invalidation and replacement. Prefetching and file hoarding. Location management techniques.
After successful completion of the course, the students are able to:
- understand the quality of services parameters for multimedia traffic and the various trade-off;
- evaluate the network technologies for satisfying particular QOS requirements;
- understand the design of high-speed LAN and wide area networks to support multimedia and real-time traffic and applications;
- Understand the mechanisms to admission control, flow control, routing and congestion control in high sped networks and wireless networks.
- Understand the systems issues related to mobile computing; apply some of the solutions proposed by researchers to these issues;
evaluate and design mobile network systems.
